Yea! I did it! I made it to week 12 of the Frilly & Funkie 12 tags of Christmas challenge! Whoo hoooooo! The challenge is sponsored by the Funkie Junkie Boutique and, although time is running out, you can still join in the challenge. All of the information on the challenge can be found on Linda's blog.
This week Linda's tag "opened." Her tag was lovely and it got me to thinking how could I make something that "opened." So, Linda's tag inspired me to use something on my tag that could be opened. I thought about several different ideas but settled on Santa's book. The book that lists whether we're on the nice or naughty list for Christmas. It was going to be a challenge since I have never made a book much less one small enough to fit on a size #8 tag.
I started off making my book covers out of chip board. I cut a 1/4 inch to create the break between the cover and the binding. This allowed for the bend in the book to happen. I then took some off white cardstock and stamped a versa mark image of the small book cover stamp by Tim Holtz. I've had this stamp for a while and was so happy to be able to finally use it. I embossed it with Wendy Vecchi Red Geranium embossing powder. I then took a Wink of Stella Green Shimmer pen and colored in the pattern on the book cover. The plaque was colored in with a Wink of Stella Gold Metallic pen. Once that dried I took some Tea Dye distress ink and dulled down the remaining off white cardstock. A metallic pen was used for the title. I wanted the title to be better printed but maybe next time.
I then cut white chip board pages (thin chipboard). I used antique linen distress ink to make the pages look old. Tree Branch Archival Ink was used to stamp the lines on the page using the notebook page stamp from Tim Holtz. I stamped "nice" and "naughty" on the top of a page and then added names to the list. Festive Berries distress ink pen was used for the "nice" and Black Soot distress ink pen was used for "naughty." The "nice" and "naughty" were stamped using a Tim Holtz alphabet stamp set. I then took a Tim Holtz December calendar stamp and stamped it on a piece of chipboard and embossed it with Wendy Vecchi's Fern embossing powder.
I then put the book together. I wrapped the covers with the off white paper and embossed book cover. A blank page was used for the inside of the cover and the December calendar was cut out and put there. I used the final page of the "naughty" list as the cover for the back cover on the inside. I used Tim Holtz long fasteners to attach it. Had just enough length for my book.
I decided I wanted a compass. So I found the small Tim Holtz compass embellishment and direction arrow. I was able to get it to fit into a Tim Holtz monocle. I then added some Snowflake Paste to it.
Then came the hard part -- the background. There were 8 different versions of a background until I settled on this one. I used a Tim Holtz Christmas star stamp. It's similar to the one I used for last week's tag but this one is wider and longer. I stamped a #8 black tag with versa mark and then embossed it using Wendy Vecchi's Red Geranium embossing powder.
Once I finally had my background I was able to figure out how to attach the compass and the book. I decided to add some book cover embellishments using a snowflake from The Funkie Junkie Boutique, a bow, a Santa button, a die cut from the mini Tim Holtz poinsetta, prills for the center of the poinsetta, and some paper ephemera from Tim Holtz. I finished off the tag with a black pear pin and three jingle bells. Unfortunately when the picture was taken the red jingle bell looks out of place. I used seam binding ribbon colored with Black Soot Distress Ink for the bow. So here's tag #12. And, it opens!
